Meet Your Instructor
Learn about trauma sensitive practices from Cristal Acosta, LPC-S, NCC, CCTP, a local trauma therapist and expert. She graduated from New Mexico State University with a 4.0 GPA and earned the Outstanding Student Award from the Department of Educational Psychology in 2011. In addition to more than 10 years of clinical experience she has been trained in trauma-informed care by the National Council on Behavioral Health, Trust Based Relational Intervention, is Certified in Trauma Focused CBT, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, EMDR, and has intensely studied the latest information on trauma treatment by Dan Siegel, Bruce Perry and more. She provides trauma training to local agencies and school districts. She also provides mental health consulting services for other mental health professionals across Texas. She also has a podcast called "Through the Eyes of a Therapist" that she created in 2018.
More importantly, Cristal has done her self-work. Having been in therapy herself, she is an advocate for mental health and help-seeking because she knows how life changing it can be. As someone with lived experience, the insight to trauma-informed care she provides is nuanced and beyond textbook expertise.
A Trauma Therapist and Trainer
Cristal has been treating children, adults, and families in the border community of El Paso, Texas since 2010. Most of her clients have been through traumatic events such as separation at the border due to the immigration crisis, institutional racism, intergenerational and historical trauma, hate crimes like the August 3, 2019 shooting, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She has been talking to others about the importance of trauma sensitive and trauma-informed practices since 2016. In addition to the use of the Neurosequential Model, she bases her understanding of trauma-informed interventions from the Sanctuary Model, Trust Based Relational Intervention, and her personal and clinical experiences with trauma.
